I remember bits and pieces but not enough to find it on-line and no one wants to admit they remember it. So.....if you remember a poem about Jaws eating the Tidy Bowl Man you don't have to admit publicly that you remember it. Just drop me a note. Maybe someone from the 60's tribe would more likely remember........what am I thinking.....that is the problem.

Bob Wilkins, the iconic and laconic host of the late-night "Creature Features" show in the 1970s, died Wednesday in Reno at the age of 76 from complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 24 in Oakland's Montclair Presbyterian Church, 5701 Thornhill Drive, to celebrate the life of the slender man who stared at the world through horn-rimmed glasses and greeted viewers to his show by lighting a candle stuffed in the top of a skull, then settling into a wooden rocking chair to enjoy a cigar and the outrageously awful horror films that became another trademark.

Wilkins grew up just east of Chicago and was the oldest of seven children. Graduating from Hammond High School in 1950, he followed his father's footsteps to work at the local steel mill then joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea. Upon returning from service he enrolled at Indiana University. He moved to California in 1964 to produce TV commercials for Sacramento's Channel 3.

His career as a horror film host began a few years later when the station, which had a fine library of mostly old horror movies, asked Wilkins to offer a few words of introduction. He took the task to heart, truthfully telling viewers the movie — his first offering was "Attack of the Mushroom People," a low-budget Japanese film — was awful and suggested they not watch. Instead, he read listings from TV Guide and suggested viewers turn to another station.

Throughout his horror movie hosting career, Wilkins took a fairly jaundiced view of his offerings.

"Our second film is "Monster From the Ocean Floor," his Web site, www.bobwilkins.org quotes him as saying. "This movie is so bad that it was delivered to Channel 2 in a brown paper bag. When we're through showing it tonight, it will be part of a garage sale in Alameda tomorrow."

Wilkins' folksy, slyly funny personality won the hearts of viewers, and by 1970, he had moved to Channel 40 in Sacramento to host "The Bob Wilkins Horror Show" through 1981. He also hosted "Creature Features" from 1971-79 on Oakland's Channel 2, where he also did stints as a weatherman and host of the kids' show, "Captain Cosmic and His Wonder Robot 2T2." That show opened with a classic bit of video, which, according to the Captain Cosmic Web site, unreeled as: "Faster than a speeding BART train (a clip of the Captain running along side of a BART train as it departs from a station, Stronger than the entire Oakland Raider Football team! (a picture of the Captain lifting a Volkswagen over his head), Able to leap over tall buildings with a single bound (a picture of the Captain flying a little too close to the top of the Transamerica pyramid building and a sound effect of ripping pants)." The program also introduced the Bay Area to many Japanese sci-fi shows.

Although he later made occasional personal appearances for groups of fans who recalled "Creature Features," Wilkins left television in 1981 to return to advertising and his own agency and eventually to work for John Ascuaga's Nugget. He retired from the Sparks casino in 1995 and continued to live in the Reno area.

Wilkins is survived by his wife, Sally, of Reno, and children, Rob of Oakland and Nancy Fitzpatrick or Sacramento and sisters Nancy George, Linda Seth, Judie Chism, Sally Blevins and Sue Dorrance.

A fan celebration of Wilkins will be scheduled sometime in the coming months.

So I was watching MSNBC late last night, which I don't usually do, and instead of Keith Olbermann, which I expected, there was a special documentary on Jonestown--complete with some footage shot by NBC journalists who had covered it (including a cameraman who was shot and killed as he was filming).

It was an excellent documentary, even-handed, told from the perspective of intelligent, articulate survivors, the journalists who had been there, and Jackie Speier. It was also, you can imagine, pretty freaking searing, with lots of graphic yet somehow tasteful footage taken right before and right after the suicides, and Jim Jones's recorded ranting. I normally don't watch stuff like this at all, and I was pretty much fused to the couch for the next 90 minutes, long past my bedtime.

The part I didn't know before watching this was that Jones hadn't just been some random freak. He was well-known and highly regarded in the San Francisco political scene (largely, the narrative suggested, for delivering blocs of votes, but also for his work in social services). After the show, I couldn't sleep for awhile, so I looked up some details (to really mess up my dreams), and found out that when complaints about goings-on at Guyana started to reach critical mass, Harvey Milk wrote a letter to President Carter defending Jones as a great guy, whose detractors were out to bring down a great man.

Harvey Milk and George Moscone were gunned down 9 days after the Jonestown massacre.

It was rumored at the time that they were assassinated by the same hit squad that was supposedly coming after the People's Temple, until they found out it was only Dan White. You remember, the guy who apparently cracked up from too much junk food, aka "The Twinkie Defense." Dan White was a piece of work himself, an elected city official and a 'former police officer, and former firefighter, White would often go into trances during supervisors’ meetings and then impulsively goose-step around the room," according to one source I found.

So, for those of you who in the Bay Area then, WTF? What the hell was in the Kool Aid in San Francisco, that Jones was taken for a fine upstanding citizen, that Dan "Impulsive Goosestep" White held public office in the first place, that, during a time that I in the midwest was frequenting smalltown drag bars, hanging out with lesbians in Chicago, fundamentalist Grand Rapids and tiny Kalamazoo, and totally out about my bisexuality, that in a city like San Francisco, somebody gunned down Harvey Milk? Or maybe it wasn't because he was gay at all, but because, as some have suggested, White was just flipped about Jonestown?

Was everybody in San Francisco totally fucking crazy then? What was it like to be there?

I had inherited my older sisters wardrobe atleast, she was 13 when I was born & when I out grew her old bellbottoms & peasant tops, I did not see that style again until the 90's, ironicly the girls that teased me the most over my sisters clothes a few short years ago eagerly scooped up the "new style" as did I hoping it would bring a little color back into my world. when dazed & confused came out & then that 70's show, I thought ah there it is the elusive decade I missed out on, life before the nasty Regan years! my friends finally started joking if I wore one more peasant top, smoked a joint, fell asleep listining to disco, I would pull a reverse rumpestilskin & wake up in the 70's. Would suite me just fine!

I watched it again last night. Every time I do I sort of nod in nostalgia when I hear Do You Feel Like We Do, hear the freshman try to act like they know wtf is going on, and watch the teenagers drive muscle cars that are now worth $65,000. We used to spend every Friday and Saturday cruising down 4th in San Rafael, drag racing out on Andersen Avenue, drinking oh-so-adult Henry Weinhardt's, and puking off of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill. Oh...and EVERYBODY knew every episode of Gilligan's Island by heart and had a crush on Marcia or Greg Brady.

____________________________________

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs, dirty words and the demise of humanity, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital on Sunday. He was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart and drug-dependency problems, died at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT) after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material developed over 50 years, the bald, bearded Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine called "Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television." A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of the routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the 1978 case, Federal Communications Commission vs. Pacifica Foundation, the top U.S. court ruled that the words cited in Carlin's routine were indecent, and that the government's broadcast regulator could ban them from being aired at times when children might be listening.

The Grammy-winning Carlin remained an active presence on the comedy circuit. Carlin was scheduled to receive the John F. Kennedy Center's prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in November and his publicist said Carlin performed in Las Vegas this month.

His comedic sensibility revolved around a central theme: humanity is a cursed, doomed species.

"I don't have any beliefs or allegiances. I don't believe in this country, I don't believe in religion, or a god, and I don't believe in all these man-made institutional ideas," he told Reuters in a 2001 interview.

Carlin told Playboy in 2005 that he looked forward to an afterlife where he could watch the decline of civilization on a "heavenly CNN."

"The world is a big theater-in-the round as far as I'm concerned, and I'd love to watch it spin itself into oblivion," he said. "Tune in and watch the human adventure."

AWARDS

Carlin wrote three best-selling books, won four Grammy Awards, recorded 22 comedy albums, headlined 14 HBO television specials, and hosted hundreds of variety shows. One was the first episode of "Saturday Night Live" in 1975, when he was high on cocaine.

Drug addiction plagued him for much of his life, beginning with marijuana experimentation as a teen, graduating to cocaine in the 1970s, and then to prescription painkillers and wine. During the cocaine years, Carlin ignored his finances and ended up owing about $3 million in back taxes. In 2004, he entered a Los Angeles rehab clinic for his alcohol and Vicodin abuse.

George Dennis Carlin was born on May 12, 1937, in New York City, where he was raised with an older brother by their single mother. He fondly recalled that the nuns at his school tolerated his early comedic inclinations.

After a brief, troubled stint in the U.S. Air Force, he started honing his comic act, developing such characters as Al Sleet, a "hippie-dippie weatherman."

Carlin told Playboy that his sensibilities developed in the 1950s, "when comedy stopped being safe ... (and) became about saying no to authority." He cited such influences as Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Dick Gregory and Bob Newhart.

He also dabbled in movies and television, recently voicing a hippie Volkswagen bus named Fillmore in the Pixar cartoon "Cars."

Carlin is survived by his second wife Sally Wade; daughter Kelly Carlin McCall; and brother Patrick. His first wife, Brenda, died of cancer in 1997. News of his death was first reported by the television show "Entertainment Tonight."

We were assigned The Outsiders in Jr. High and I fell in love with the book. Then I devoured the other two mentioned in the subject line above. I remember sitting on the roof of my house watching our pool being dug because our parents were ubbercool that day and pulled us out of school to watch our backyard be bulldoozed. Then the part where Johnny dies came up and there I am...sitting on the roof in the hot sun watching a bunch of big construction workers in our backyard and trying like hell not to start crying. Then I found out that S.E. stood for Susan Eloise and I was shocked that it was a *girl* that wrote it. Then I saw the movie and was bummed that it sucked so bad. Locally (Northern CA) it was mandatory reading. How was it around the rest of the country?

Aerobics classes in the local gym inspired this topic. Mechanical hopping and arm-flapping to a fairly unimaginative retro soundrack (the closest the music ever comes to techno or triphop is Mr. Roboto) gives me not much else to do but study the music.

The Hollies, for instance. They made a whole career of cribbing their betters, packaging all the complex weirdness of 60s/70s-era Britpop, swamprock, psychedelia and funk into neat, tidy, simple to consume pop packets that somehow retain their own kind of integrity. "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" genuinely rocks, nevermind that P-Funk was making everybody's radio explode with much weirder versions of the same riffs.

Elton John--treacly, yet complex. _Much_ better than Billy Joel for piano. Bernie Taupin's weird lyrics worked as little sound poems, even though they never put me into quite the same state of zen bemusement and poetic melancholy as, say, similarly gnomic Dylan or Jethro Tull.

Once I get past the cringe factor, "Afternoon Delight" is actually a pretty song, and ABBA, when I can stand to actually listen to them, are doing some fairly intricate stuff.

Then there's Fleetwood Mac.....
My sister and I really loved the show, though I barely remember the details. All I remember is they always shouted "Hey Margolis!" in one of the skits.

In second grade I had the partridge family and in third grade I had a scooby do lunchbox.

Who knew that if I saved at least the last two I could have made some bucks on eBay. I think by third grade those oval lunch boxes started coming out and by fifth or sixth grade they became the softer plastic kind of lunch boxes. That was kind of nice b/c as I recall kids would get pretty injured from being beat up by bullies using those lunch boxes to hit other kids. lol.

I kind of miss my partridge family lunch box.

He would play Popeye cartoons and The Little Rascals and then play a movie. Usually like Pippi Longstocking or Jacob Two Two Meets the Hooded Fang lol Well he used to play this one movie, but for the life of me I cant remember what it was. I barely remember any of it but I know I loved it. I remember there was a big castle and the bad guy had all these children locked up in jails in the castle. So like in the throne room along the sides were these jail cells and the children were locked up in them and the hero had to come save them but I dont remember who the hero was. I seem to remember the heros being kids for some reason. Does this ring a bell with anyone? I wish I could remember more of it but I just cant.

Adults in the 70's were weird.

One couple I babysat for insisted on greeting me at the door naked when I came to watch their kids--and this wasn't either coast, but a conservative small town in the midwest.

Another woman whose kids I watched was having a lesbian fling with the nun who taught us 7th grade. Everybody knew it, but nobody said much about it--she was a good teacher and the family were active church members.

Also, high school student/teacher flings, sexual and emotional, were not regarded as unusual. They got annoying only when the teacher involved attempted to exert too much emotional control over the student.

Books on the average '70s adult bookshelves: Kahlil Gibran's _The Prophet_, _I'm OK, You're OK_, _Oopen Marriage_ (of course), Spock's _Baby and Child Care), and maybe some Rod McKuen poems for the seriously artistic.

When I visited my cousins, I smoked pot with them and swore not to tell their parents. When the kids were out, I smoked pot with their parents and swore not to tell their kids. Aaah, what a time that was.

What do the rest of you remember about strange adult behavior?

New member here, but I have had some recent revelations and wondered if those of you, graduating in the late 70's, early 80's might feel the same . . .

I recently watched a documentary on Peter Frampton, and realized what a great guitarist he really was . . . also, the whole disco/Bee Gee thing (obviously varies depending on where you were raised), and also, my childhood crush on Leif Garrett (child star turned heroine addict) . . . and I realized that we were all screwed . . . I mean, it was a changing time . . . after the turn of the 1980's you either evolved with the 80's Punk/New Wave/Metal or you fell back into the 70's and never changed . . .

I almost feel guilty that the three stars previously mentioned (come on, admit it, the Bee Gee's where talented, just type cast), got left behind in the 80's, because we, as a generation never really made the 80's transition . . . we got married, had kids, identified with the 70's, which were over, and at best, maybe, picked up some early punk and New Wave, but as collective whole, do we really identify with anything after the early 80's??

The thing is, no one but my immediate generation can identify with this . . . my Ex is seven years older and never got into Frampton (come on, anyone who graduated in 79', 80', 81' has to agree the Frampton Comes Alive was it . . .), and everyone younger than me got swept up in the whole 80's New wave thing . . .

Does anyone else out there understand where I am coming from???

Dateline: Haight Ashbury, San Francisco
Tuesday, December 12, 2006

What is the Summer of Love?

Here in Haight Ashbury that question has been brewing for the past 6 months. May be to find answers we should look at what really happened in 1967 and its legacy and how it can benefit us today. This is the aim of the Summer Of Love Festival, based in Haight Ashbury San Francisco where it all began. It is also the research mission of their Director, Deborah Paulino, who wasn’t there in 1967 but has enough respect for its legacy to do some homework.

The events in 1967 known as the Summer Of Love spanned from January 14 with the Human Be In at the Golden Gate Park Polo Fields and ended October 6 with the Death Of Hippie parade down Haight St., and may events of different natures and content in between and shortly after there and around the world. The promoters and artists of the time were mostly unconnected. The influences of that time were the cause of their simultaneous happenings, some of which are recorded in history books, others only remembered by those who where there.

Hippies, LSD, and Deadheads were only a small part of what was happening in 1967 San Francisco. There were also the intellectuals from Berkeley, the Beatniks from North Beach, the Flower Children from the evangelistic Christian Churches, Bikers from the Hells Angels, the African Americans and more. This experiment spread out all over the world to Boston, New York, London, Los Angeles, Australia, and other Western centers of culture and education. Summer Of Love in 1967 was about youth and the new ideas from young exploring and re-inventing minds.

It was an era of bringing together and celebrating different urban cultures in a gathering of tribes and a living community experiment called Haight Ashbury. It also was an attempt to find ways to heal the world’s problems, then as now the major issue of war, but also the environment, homelessness, free medical for the needy, freedom of expression, and integration and sharing of cultural exchanges.

It also opened Western eyes to indigenous cultures, then the wisdom of the North American and South American Indians, the Eastern mysticism of India. And since then the Australian Aborigines, the African Tribes, Mahamedism, Eskimo, Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan and more. Western society today is inspired by these cultures and freedom of expression in music, drum circles, natural health care, fashion, dance, spirituality, lifestyle, poetry, astrology, and philosophy.

Their 1967 legacy to us is the ecliptic cultural freedom we take for granted in urban centers today. Other cultural identities developed from and since 1967 like the Punks and Rastafarians in the 1970s, the Rainbow Tribes and environmentalists in the 1970s, the Gay, Lesbian, and Goth in the late 1970s and early 1980, and the Electronic Music or Rave Culture and Heavy Metal Culture of the late 1980s early 1990s. And in the 21st Century many urban cultures often known by their favorite music genres like Hip Hop, Industrial, Grunge, or interests like Geeks, New Age, Neo Tribal, Gamers, and Gothic Vampires.

Summer Of Love today is not about dusting off your hippy beads and bell-bottoms as a fashion statement, it is more about dusting off you philosophy and poetry books and checking out what’s new. The Summer Of Love Festival is about new ideas, new arts, new technology, and new ways to help the planet and its many and varied peoples.

This is all of what Summer Of Love Festival 2007 is honoring and celebrating.

The Summer Of Love Festival is an open program of multiple events presented by various promoters, organizations, and non-profits, which are at this moment gathering on the website’s Presenters list. The events range from one day concerts in the park to 3-day camp out music and lifestyle festivals, to open mics, to BurningMan-esq costume galas, to 60’s tribute cabarets, to sketch comedy, to electronic music street fairs, plus more events joining as they are discovered.

Also on the Summer Of Love Festival project list are compilation CD’s of music and spoken word, and t-shirts with fine art and poetry using print on demand technology. Unlike many namesake anniversaries before, Summer of Love Festival aims to give exposure to its individual artists and actually pay them per CD or t-shirt sold. A portion of the net profits will also be distributed amongst charities.

“Our aim is to honor the events of 1967 by promoting artists and presenters celebrating eclectic culture in their own way in the now. 1967 Promoted the freedom of religion, speech, and self-expression we take for granted today. Not only in events such as USA’s Burning Man and Berlin/SF Love Parade, but it also opened urban eyes to the culture and wisdom of indigenous and ancient cultures in spirituality, health care, fashion, and environmentally friendly lifestyles, technology, and industry.” Deborah Paulino stated.

Please create a free account on the web site at http://www.summeroflovefestival.com to receive updates and to post your links. To list your event in the Summer Of Love Festival program and be part of the Presenters list is free.

He's now known by his real name, Gaylord Sartain of Police Academy fame (the big lard ass). In San Francisco there was "Creature Feature". All across America in the late 60s and early 70s, kids would stay up late with their friends to watch 'Creature from the Black Lagoon', 'Abbot & Costello Meet the Mummy' and many others. But what made these films more fun was the crazy persona of the host. Believe it or not, Gaylord released a 7" record called "Scope Them Turkeys Out" by Mazeppa Pappazoidi and the Kazoo Symphony Orchestra!!! It has loops from horror films and a crazy wha-wha guitar ala Zappa!!! at the end the song just skips the groove until he says "Why don't you just get up and flip that record over"!! Genius. Share your childhood late night fun facts.....

I personally was never as open about sex and never tried pot in high school like on the show, . I dressed like the characters though.

The other thing I remember was that square gum that had liquid inside. My friends called it "cum gum" (long before I understood what that meant), but it was VERY strong cinnomon flavor and not one of those pansy sugarfree gums! =)

Real quick note: I was talking to a small group of people the other day about getting word out on something and said, "You know, it's like a Faberge commercial: and she told two friends and so on and so on." Not one person understood the reference. I felt so old!! =(

I still have a tiny newspaper clipping that says my carnival raised $35. Not bad for a little philanthropic kid. Does anyone remember these? Do people still have them?

Tom Chapin, long-time folk singer, entertainer and former TV show host will be making his third annual appearance at Fiddler's Dream, 17th Street and Glendale in Phoenix, on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m.

Boomers will remember Chapin as the host of the cleverly-written educational program "Make a wish" in the early 70s on ABC. But Tom's a lot more than that. A talented songwriter and musician, his songs cover virtually every topic with intelligence, warmth and humor.

Tom's concerts also include a song or two from his late brother, Harry Chapin. This is a great show. Don't miss it! Tickets are $20 in advance ($22 at the door) and are available at Fiddler's Dream Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during regular hours.

If you are attending the Natium show at Big Daddy's this weekend, and you'd like to buy tickets for Tom Chapin, let me know and I will bring some along to sell to you.

It's going to be a great show. Due to the expected crowd, the concert will be held in the Quaker Meeting House rather than the usual smaller Fiddler's Dream building. Same address though -- 17th St. and Glendale.
